Podcast & Audio Accessibility: Interactive Transcripts, WebVTT & Custom Players

Podcasts, executive interviews, and recorded webinars represent major corporate communication channels. Under WCAG 1.2.1 (Audio-Only Prerecorded - Level A), all prerecorded audio content must be paired with an equivalent full text transcript containing spoken dialogue, speaker names, and descriptions of essential non-speech sound effects.

WCAG 1.2.1 & 1.2.2 Audio Content Standards

• Full Dialogue Transcript: Complete verbatim text of all spoken words.
• Speaker Labels: Clear attribution for every change of speaker (e.g. [Sarah Jenkins, CEO]:).
• Sound Effects: Descriptive notes for meaningful background audio (e.g. [Audience applause] or [Telephone ringing]).

Building Synchronized Interactive Transcripts

Interactive transcripts highlight spoken phrases in real time and allow users to click any sentence to jump the audio player directly to that timestamp, benefiting deaf users, ESL listeners, and cognitive readers.
